Hormones – Who is in charge?
Hormones – Do they control us or do we control them?
When studying hormones at college, I found it difficult to imagine them, remember them, understand them. As with most science it is talked about from a theoretical place, separate from us and at arms length. But our biological workings are certainly not at arms length and when our hormones go out of balance we know it from deep inside. We can get to know our hormones and how they affect us but it is perhaps more useful to get to know ourselves and how we affect our hormones.
Hormones are within us, they are a part of what makes us, us. They control physiological things that occur in the body and often it feels as though they control us. But I believe we can very much affect our hormones.
Once we feel at the mercy of something we feel powerless and I know what it feels like to be at the mercy of my hormones. But I have also experienced a journey out of this low, depressed and volatile place and into a place where I can feel the sun shine again, feel the space, the breath, the next step.
I believe we have the choice to run ourselves into the ground and we have the choice to fly, to feel well.
In my experience our hormonal journey is our life journey. Through the use of herbal medicine, nutrition, relaxation, self awareness, exercise, acupuncture, meditation and perhaps most importantly accepting and allowing ourself to be, we can begin to make choices that support our health. And as we feel the affects of these choices, and the hormones, that were once seeming to be so out of control now working more in balance with us again, we realise more and more that our hormonal health is perhaps not so out of our hands as we once imagined.
We don’t need to know the name of a hormone to know how it makes us feel. But as we get to know more about how we are feeling we may also get to know more about our hormones and how the mystery of the body works. What is the definition of health? What does being well mean to you?
Take yourself on a journey following your hormones, let them guide you, let them tell you how you are, what you want to do, how you want to be. Remember they are not just a list of long words that have actions and origins in the body you can’t remember, they don’t need to be remembered to be known, they just are. They are a part of the bigger part of us, the one, the aspect of us that contains all of life, all of humanity. One. They are moving towards balance, as we are, as is all of life. Balance and Oneness.
